Sexually Transmitted InfectionsHere is some information about the more common sexually transmitted infections. Although the symptoms are given as a guide, often an infection will have no symptoms. If you have had unprotected sex (without a condom) it is best to get tested for all of the infections. Although having an infection can be upsetting or embarrassing, it is always best to know, as the sooner we find an infection, the sooner it can be treated. The earlier we find an infection the less likely it is to cause any long term problems. Some clinics only test for Chlamydia. If you think you have been exposed
to Chlamydia you may be at risk of other infections. At Whittall Street
Clinic we test for all sexually transmitted infections where possible.
We sometimes test women for: And men for:
We also sometimes test for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C but this depends on the information you give the doctor or nurse. Not everyone needs tests for these infections. You can help protect yourself from most sexually transmitted infections
by using condoms every time you have vaginal, anal or oral sex. If you
are unsure of how to use condoms, please ask to see a health adviser
who will be happy to talk to you about it.
