Bacterial vaginosis (BV)

Bacterial vaginosis is a common vaginal infection; it is not sexually transmitted, and so can occur in women who are not sexually active.
It occurs more often in women who use scented soaps or perfumed bubble baths, douche or use vaginal deodorants, and women who smoke.

Signs and Symptoms

• Some women have no symptoms, or are unaware of any symptoms
• Some women notice a change in their vaginal discharge. It may increase, change colour or develop a fishy smell, especially after sex.

What happens if I am told I have Bacterial vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis is easily treated with antibiotics. It can also clear naturally without treatment.

Bacterial vaginosis can sometimes reoccur. You can reduce the risk of developing bacterial vaginosis by:
• Making sure you do not use perfumes or soaps in the vaginal area – just using water will be enough to wash this area.
• Reducing the amount of baths you take using perfumed bubble baths.
• Not douching or using vaginal deodorants.
• Not using strong detergents to wash your underwear.

BV can be treated during pregnancy. There is some evidence to suggest that BV increases a woman’s risk of having a miscarriage or premature delivery. If you are pregnant and have any symptoms it is important that you have a full STI screen and check up so that any infections can be treated.
